Nobel Laureate Assembly for the Prevention of Nuclear War

 

At a time when the risk of nuclear war is increasing, actions to prevent nuclear war are vital to humanity’s future. Coinciding with the 80th anniversary of the Trinity Test and the dawn of the nuclear age, the Assembly will gather Nobel Laureates and nuclear experts to discuss and debate current and future nuclear challenges. The assembly will produce and endorse a list of actionable recommendations for preventing nuclear war aimed at leaders and policy makers around the world.

2:30 – 3:30 | Keynote Address

Remembering the Trinity Test on its 80th Anniversary. Remarks on the Trinity Test, the legacy of explosive nuclear testing, and the threat of its return.

3:30 – 4:00 | Presentation and Signing of Declaration

Participants sign the Declaration

4:00 – 5:00 | Declaration Release and Press Conference

Members of the Assembly present the Declaration and take questions from the press. David Gross and Owen Gaffney will provide brief closing remarks.

SUMMARY & GOALS OF THE ASSEMBLY

The Assembly will convene the world’s foremost experts on nuclear weapons at a critical moment in global security, and is designed to produce actionable, pragmatic recommendations. The Nobel Laureates serve as a stand-in for the world’s collective conscience–by convening them alongside domain experts, the Assembly aims to directly engage with policymakers and institutions to drive meaningful change at a time of unprecedented risk of nuclear conflagration.

The Assembly will negotiate and sign a Declaration establishing a set of guiding principles to shape nuclear diplomacy in the decade ahead.
